A Retailer’s Guide to Choosing Soft Drinks

Assorted soft drink cans

When reviewing soft drinks for a retail range, the exact product and container format matter as much as the brand name. A structured enquiry helps you compare the items that fit your customers, shelf space and receiving arrangements without relying on broad catalogue descriptions.

Define the range you want to review

List the flavours, variants and container sizes you are considering. Keep cans, bottles, multipacks and cases distinct so that the requested quantity is easy to interpret. Include the product barcode where it is available.

Decide whether you are replenishing an established line or assessing a new addition. A trial enquiry may call for different quantities and a different mix from a repeat requirement based on your own trading records.

Check the exact packaging and label

Ask for the current label information for the proposed item, including the information relevant to its intended market. Similar branding across different markets does not mean the packaging and product details are interchangeable.

Use the actual product information to assess ingredients, nutrition details and any relevant warnings. The European Commission’s food information page explains the general framework for mandatory information.

Consider display and receiving space

Match the proposed quantity to the space available at your premises and the period over which you expect to sell it. Ask for case configuration and handling information rather than estimating them from the front of a container.

If a product will be displayed chilled, consider your own display capacity and follow the relevant product instructions. Avoid assuming that a particular delivery or storage arrangement is included unless it has been discussed and confirmed.

Record the points that still need confirmation

Compare proposed alternatives by variant, size and pack format, not simply by brand. Keep the original requirement visible so that a substitution does not become an unnoticed change to the enquiry.

Confirm the destination, availability, timing and commercial details for each proposal. A catalogue is a useful discovery tool, while the written correspondence should establish what is actually being discussed for your business.
